Summary
In this article, we explain the main advantages of working with a culture media preparator: streamlined workflow, time savings, cost reduction, and improved final product quality.
Are you familiar with the advantages of using a culture media preparator?
Today, any microbiology or plant tissue culture laboratory manager is focused on automating their production processes to increase both efficiency and quality.
In addition to minimizing manual operations, which are time-consuming and susceptible to human error or accidents, it is a top priority to assign laboratory staff to higher value-added tasks. It is also essential to work with procedures that ensure optimized traceability and high-quality results.
At RAYPA, a world-leading manufacturer of laboratory autoclaves and food analysis equipment with over 50 years of experience, we have found the solution: our culture media preparators.
These systems are suitable for all types of laboratories due to their performance, size, capacity, and technical features. They offer an all-in-one solution by integrating the preparation, sterilization, cooling, dispensing and automated cleaning of the dispensing lines in a single device.
Advantages of using RAYPA culture media preparators
The benefits of automation are indisputable, especially in complex fields such as microbiology and plant tissue culture. Implementing automation in these environments goes far beyond reducing costs and boosting productivity.
Here are the many advantages of using a RAYPA culture media preparator to fully automate your media preparation workflow:
1. Process optimization
Automating processes involves managing and improving control over the entire cycle by tracking performance indicators to obtain a more reliable control and analysis. This guarantees homogeneous and higher-quality samples with a lower risk of medium contamination and an increase in productivity with a significant reduction in costs.
In order to better manage this procedure, the media preparator records the entire process, step-by-step. Also, thanks to its large capacity, we can scale up and increase production if necessary, producing bigger volumes in less time. Therefore, the process is faster, and the laboratory is more efficient.
2. Accuracy, homogeneity and speed
Performing the preparation, sterilization, cooling, dispensing and cleaning of the dispensing lines within the same unit brings a level of precision that is hard to match with traditional manual techniques and autoclaves.
Our TLV-MP and AE-MP Series media preparators record every detail and automatically follow the preprogrammed parameters marked for each stage.
Manual media preparation using autoclaves presents several drawbacks:
- Heat exposure can vary very significantly among the samples of the same batch, since the temperature is only monitored in a reference vessel or, even worse, only through chamber temperature. This means that not all samples are processed in the same way and the attained degree of sterility achieved in each container will be different. In contrast, with a media preparator, sterilization is carried out homogeneously, since the preparation is continuously stirred and its temperature is precisely regulated by a flexible probe inserted directly into the culture medium.
- In most autoclaves, it is not possible to monitor the F0 value reached in each container, an essential factor to ensure reliable culture media processing. With RAYPA media preparators, this limitation is eliminated: a flexible temperature probe records the internal temperature of the medium, and the microprocessor automatically calculates the F0 progression until the target sterilization level is reached.
- During the sterilization and cooling phases, agar-containing bottles cannot be removed from the chamber, which may lead to issues such as lack of homogeneity, solute insolubility, and the formation of bubbles. In contrast, with our equipment, the medium remains in constant agitation, avoiding all of these issues.
- The time between the end of sterilization and reaching the dispensing temperature is typically very long, as liquids cool down slowly. Moreover, manual handling of hot containers increases the risk of operator burns. With our TLV-MP and AE-MP media preparators, these risks are eliminated. The operator does not need to handle hot vessels, and thanks to the fast cooling system, the medium reaches dispensing temperature much faster. This temperature is also fully adjustable, and the equipment allows users to choose between multiple dispensing systems.
- Lastly, cleaning individual containers manually can be tedious and inconvenient. Spills and breakages are common, which complicates autoclave maintenance. With the media preparator, the culture medium remains inside an inner vessel that can be easily removed and cleaned. Furthermore, unlike other manufacturers, RAYPA media preparators perform dispensing line cleaning through high-temperature steam pulses, which greatly simplifies the cleaning process and ensures proper disinfection.
3. Traceability throughout the entire process
Identifying and monitoring each stage of the culture media production workflow is a fundamental requirement in microbiology and plant tissue culture laboratories, as part of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
Manually controlling the traceability during the preparation of the medium becomes a laborious task in which the possibility of human error is present at all times. Thanks to the connectivity of RAYPA media preparators, this deficiency is rectified as everything that happens in the media preparator is recorded for later consultation using the dedicated software. Also, tickets of each batch can be printed using an embedded printer.
4. Reduction in occupational risks and accidents
Despite the training of laboratory technicians, established protocols, and necessary clothing and equipment, accidents still occur, particularly in environments where chemical products are handled and high temperatures are involved.
Furthermore, due to the manual nature of the media preparation process, personnel are often required to perform repetitive tasks and adopt uncomfortable postures, which can lead to chronic low back pain or other related conditions over time and potentially result in sick leave.
RAYPA media preparators minimize these risks through their automated operation, ergonomic design, and flexible dispensing options, allowing operators to work more comfortably, safely, and efficiently, eliminating burn hazards and injury from repetitive strain.
At RAYPA, safety and prevention are a top priority. That’s why all our units come with the following protection systems as standard:
- Positive pressure door locking system.
- Open door sensor.
- Warning messages and alerts.
- Water level detectors.
- Safety valve.
- Safety thermostat.
